Introduction

This term report aims to achieve the target of understanding leadership goals and how one can develop leadership abilities to achieve the leadership goals. Purpose and Overview

This term report further aims to cater to the idea of accomplishing leadership goals in the context of one’s personal life.  For instance, the report will help in understanding and evaluating the situations and circumstances under which certain leadership qualities are highly successful.

Lastly, this report will mostly revolve around the personal leadership vision statement of the author, which can be stated as:
“To develop the traits and characteristics of most successful leaders on the world at present and from past, to become one of the most renowned and successful leaders in the world”

Leadership Goals

To become an effective and inspiring leader, it is necessary to develop to leadership qualities in one’s character and personality. For this, two leadership qualities have been identified that seem to be possessed by most of the successful leaders seen by the world. These two qualities are the leadership goals for one’s life, which are:
  • Acting with integrity
  • Favor optimism
(Lock, 2001).

Favor Optimism

Favoring optimism is the ability of a person to recognize, utilize, manage and understand the emotions of oneself in a positive manner to release stress, empathize with others, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts and overcome the challenges in life. It has an important trait to develop as most successful leaders were aware of their emotions and took important decisions in a cool and calm way. In addition to that, favoring optimism also impacts the situations and circumstances in everyday life routine. The lacking of favoring optimism can highly impact the professional, as well as personal, life of an individual in very negative way (Humphery, 2002).
To develop the skill of favoring optimism, one needs to be patient and indulge in active routine for months. Moreover, it is built through stress reductions, stay focused and concentrated and most importantly connecting oneself with others on a daily basis. To develop the skill of favoring optimism, one needs to have certain other abilities, such as:
  • Ability to manage and reduce stress within the moment in a different environment settings
  • To be able to realize one’s emotions and avoid them overwhelming oneself
  • To be able to connect with other people through a non-verbal and emotional way of communication
  • To be able to use play and humor to better cope with the challenging problems and situations
  • To be able to resolve conflicts in a positive manner while maintaining the level of confidence
(Fieste, 2011).
Through the development of favoring optimism, a person will be able to execute better at work. For instance, emotional intelligence will help in better navigation of the social difficulties at workplace. At a personal level, it helps in enhancing the confidence level, which leads to quick boosts and promotions in career. Secondly, the Favoring optimism will help a person to be able to cope the stress levels in a more proactive manner, as failure to do so may lead to severe consequences on health. Lacking of Favoring optimism may lead to unnecessary stress levels that can rise blood pressures and enhance the chances of heart attacks.
Similarly, the ability of favoring optimism will help a person in establishing strong relationships while working in a team. This signifies that by having an understanding of one’s emotions and knowledge of how to manage the emotions, a person is better able to exemplify and express one’s feelings. In addition to that, this ability will also help in understanding the feelings of other people (Hudson, 2003). This is highly appreciated skill if working in a group or team. Also, this skill will allow conducting communication in a more effective way that paves path to maintain stronger relationships with people not only at work but also in personal life.
Lastly, this ability will also help in resolving the conflicts in a positive manner. This will eventually help the company in the long run, as well. It is important to acquire such a skill because in any organization and workplace, no two people have same needs, expectations and opinions. Therefore, rising of conflicts at the workplace is an inevitable situation. However, to resolve conflicts in a constructive and healthy manner, building trust between two people is very important (Zander and Gruenfeld, 2001). Such degree of trust can only be developed if the person knows how to manage one’s emotions under stressful situations.

Acting with Integrity

Secondly, the goal of developing the skill of acting with integrity should be of most priority to the people who inspire to become future leaders. Integrity is the idea of demonstrating concern and listening to the understanding to the ideas and feelings of others. (Schein, 1992). Developing the skill of integrity would help the person to become fully aware of the feelings of other people in the surrounding and how this impacts the perception of those people. Also, it is important to know that integrity does not reflect that a person should be admitting other people’s opinions and ideas; instead empathy is related towards appreciating those ideas of others.
Integrity can be developed under Barrett’s value framework. It is important to evolve leadership skills under this framework as it helps in overcoming the idea that many people lose upon their leadership skills once they acquire the post of a senior executive. To develop integrity at a leadership level, one must assertively implement the action strategies of cultural values assessment, leadership values assessment and leadership development report (Hyatt, 2012). Through these three assessment action strategies, one will be able to clearly grasp the leadership aspects of integrity.
At a personal level, developing the ability of empathy will derive strong tangible benefits for the person in a very short period of time. Acting with integrity is directly related to the need and ability to understand the lives and wants of other people around. Moreover, being a leader with integrity is to help others to be inspired by one. People tend to listen and pay attention to leaders with integrity. Most of the successful leaders take time out to understand and show interest to the needs of their workers and employees (Fieste, 2011). Such leaders are aware that these employees and relations will help and support as a leader in times of needs. Moreover, at a personal level, such a trait will help in dealing with the strong challenges and issues with ease.  Through the understanding and developing the integrity towards the employees and other people in the surrounding, one can build a strong sense of trust. In the long run, this will benefit in strengthening the path to successful relationships and accomplishing goals in an efficient and effective manner. Lastly, it will also improve the overall productivity at work and raise the bar of motivation at an individual level (Lock, 2001).
Integrity requires time, effort and focus. While some people are more inclined towards meeting deadlines, others are more oriented towards building relationships in the longer run. Therefore, being such a leader, a person can foster such feelings within the whole organization. However, unfortunately, not many organizations follow the culture of empathy in the business environment of today. As a result, a lot of conflicts have started to arise in the workplace because of the fact that employees lack the element of trust among themselves (Zander and Gruenfeld, 2001). Secondly, it is also considered that the recognition or expression of any kind of emotion at the workplace is measured to be a form of weakness, and the employers regard such a worker as an emotionally weak person.

Conclusion

This term report has helped in identifying and analyzing the important leadership traits that are required by a person in today’s business environment. For this report, the traits of Favoring optimism and empathy had been chosen. Moreover, each skill has been analyzed in detail so as to have a deeper understanding of how a person can develop these traits and incorporate them in one’s personality. In addition to that, each trait is further evaluated on the basis of how developing such a trait will enable to benefit the individual at a personal, team and organizational level.
An important finding that can be observed from this term paper is that empathy and Favoring optimism are overlapping leadership traits. This means that if a person develops one trait, the other will follow automatically to the extent. However, it is necessary to notice that each trait has to be developed within its own capacities; otherwise a person may not be able to fully benefit from the idea of these skills. As a result, all the efforts to become an effective and successful leader may go in vain.
